betting known as ‘back betting’. You now have the unique opportunity
of ‘lay betting’ by playing the role of bookmaker. To put it really simply, betting exchanges offer you the ability to use your own judgement about an event that you think will not win. You can then place a lay bet on that specific event because in your opinion it cannot possibly win. This is referred to as ‘lay betting’. No longer is it necessary to only back winners for you to collect your winnings, you can now place a lay bet with the betting exchange. laying odds of 2/1:- If this football match did indeed end in a draw then you would lose £20 (2 x £10). If you played the role of bookmaker by lay betting the draw and this football match did not end in a draw, then you would get to keep the £10 stake money (less a small commission for Betfair). Lay betting on Betfair explanation: Lay betting using the above example is exactly the same as placing a £10 bet at odds of 2/1 with a traditional bookmaker but with one vital difference. A traditional bookmaker will keep your £10 stake money if the bet loses, but if you use Betfair lay betting then you will get to keep the stake money, in just the same way as the bookmakers have always done. Betting exchanges have opened up the way for almost anyone to experience the thrill and excitement of lay betting, on almost any sporting event imaginable. This could be golf, cricket, rugby, football, tennis or maybe horse racing, in fact lay betting is available on almost any sporting event that you could imagine. Let’s take a look at another example of lay betting - this time we will take a look at horse racing and how you can stack the odds in your favour, instead of against you, with lay betting. BACK BETTING: Imagine a horse race with say 12 runners. If you have a ‘back bet’ in the traditional way, in order for you to win, you would need to find the winner of the race. Therefore, with 12 runners in the race you would only have 1 horse running FOR you (the one you have bet on to win) and ALL the other 11 horses would be running AGAINST you. If any one of the other eleven horses go on to actually win the race then you lose your stake money in the traditional way (this is referred to as ‘back betting’). LAY BETTING: Using the same 12 horse race as an example. If you use a betting exchange like Betfair and lay bet just 1 horse to lose the race, you can stack the odds very much in your favour, by simply lay betting a single horse in the race. You now have ALL of the remaining 11 horses running FOR you, with only 1 horse (the one you have lay bet to lose) running AGAINST you. Therefore, if any of the remaining 11 horses go on to actually win the race then you win your lay bet (this is referred to as ‘lay betting’) I realise that lay betting might sound a little confusing, particularly if you know absolutely nothing about the subject. However, the potential profits are there for the people who take the time to learn all they possibly can about betting exchanges and lay betting in general. Let’s face it - you must agree that picking a horse to lose in a 12 runner horse race is much, much easier than trying to pick the winner of the race.
