Is it really possible to win 9 times out of 10 with lay betting?

Well it really depends on whether you are a 'backer' or a 'layer'. I'll try to explain ...

Millions of pounds profit is made each year by the bookmakers. They make most of this money simply by taking back bets from people who think that the outcome of an event will win. This is known as the traditional way of ‘back’ betting. The bookmaker keeps your stake money if the bet loses. If the bet wins the bookmaker pays you your winnings. This is traditionally known as ‘backing’ or ‘back betting’. You become the ‘backer’.

The opposite of 'backing' is 'laying' or 'lay betting' - by making full use of betting exchanges like Betfair and lay betting, you are now able to do basically the same thing as most bookmakers do everyday. Lay betting (taking bets) enables them to make their vast yearly profits. You now have the unique opportunity of lay betting the outcome of almost any event and if the bet loses, as expected, you keep the stake money in the same way as the bookmaker has always done. This is known as 'laying' or 'lay betting'. You become the 'layer'.

You've probably heard the saying “a poor bookie is very difficult to find”.

Therefore, you may want an answer to the following question:-

Back Betting - typical ‘backers’ attitude …

Most 'backers' are well aware that the odds are very much stacked against them every time they have a back bet. The excitement combined with the adrenaline rush of a possible winning bet is just too much to resist. Their selection process is usually based on a whim, or a hunch, or maybe they have received a betting tip from somebody in the know. Either way, they feel lured into the back bet and the possibility of a good win. 

Bookies love ‘gamblers’ because by their very nature they love to have a gamble on almost anything. They usually have no reliable method of making their selections, with many actually following things like family birthdays or lucky numbers to help with their selection process before actually making their back bet, or maybe they follow betting tips etc. That’s exactly why the bookies will always love gamblers.

Now, I’m not suggesting for one moment that all people who like to have a back bet are all gamblers. In fact, many people take their ‘backing’ very seriously indeed, with some actually making a very nice regular profit from back betting, by using statistical analysis, studying form, or maybe following reliable betting tips etc.

Maybe you are one of those people who have developed a really unique and successful selection process that has taken many years of research and analysis to enable you to regularly win from back betting. If so, you must have worked extremely hard collating stats etc. What a lovely position to be in, but as you probably already know you are very much in the minority.

Lay betting - typical ‘layers’ attitude …

Both the ‘back bettor’ and the ‘lay bettor’ are very likely to share some common ground, that is – they both want to win as much as they possible can in the shortest possible amount of time. This is true, but when lay betting there are many important differences that you should be aware of. By taking your lay betting seriously you are much more likely to be patient, waiting for the right lay betting opportunities to come along, therefore you will be much better prepared when the perfect lay bets materialise.

All successful ‘layers’ must develop a really strong attitude towards risk together with a highly disciplined approach to lay betting. Patience is also extremely important to ensure that you only lay bet when there are strong indications of a possible lay betting opportunity.

Now it's widely known that it is much more difficult to pick a winner, than it is to pick a loser. Indicating that, the probability of successfully lay betting is far more likely than having a successful back bet. Therefore, the odds are stacked very much in the ‘layers’ favour, with the likelihood of having success with lay betting being more probable.

If you are new to lay betting, it is important as an amateur ‘layer’ that you don’t fall into the trap of thinking that lay betting is easy. Don’t become over confident too quickly, take your time and only do lay betting on events that you fully understand.

However, the experienced and clued up ‘layer’ will have complete confidence in their selection process, whilst adopting a highly disciplined and professional approach to their lay betting. They will follow a sensible staking plan, using money that is not needed for any other purpose. This lay betting money will be used solely for laying and nothing else. This way they will never over commit themselves.

If your aim is to be highly successful at lay betting on Betfair, you should be looking to achieve a win rate of around 9 times out of 10. As you are lay betting and looking for losers, this should be a realistic win rate.
